Description
Vincristine belongs to a group of drugs known as the vinca alkaloids. Vinca alkaloids are organic compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen derived from the periwinkle plant. These drugs block cell growth by stopping mitosis by interfering with microtubule polymerization.
Vincristine sulfate is approved to treat adults and children with:
- Acute leukemia.
Vincristine sulfate is sometimes used to treat adults and children with other types of cancer, including:
- Hodgkin lymphoma.
- Neuroblastoma.
- Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).
- Rhabdomyosarcoma.
- Wilms tumor.
Vincristine, also known as leurocristine and marketed under the brand name Oncovin among others, is a chemotherapy medication used to treat a number of types of cancer. This includes acute lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, neuroblastoma, and small cell lung cancer among others.
