Description
Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) are erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) used in the treatment of anemia, where the human body is not producing the enough red blood cells, anemia can be resulting from Chronic Kidney Disease. It is also used in the treatments for cancer or HIV infection. They are used pre-operatively in some surgical patients too.
Currently, three forms are marketed – epoetin α – Alpha, epoetin β – Beta, epoetin δ – Delta (undergoing trials).
Widely used is Recombinant human erythropoietin Alfa (epoetin α), marketed by many Indian and multinational pharmaceutical companies like Intas and Zydus (link of the page). However, epoetin β is currently marketed in India only by Roche as NeoRecormon. (link of the page)
